Liverpool‘s first Champions League game at Anfield as new manager Arne Slot ended with a 2-0 win over Bologna, making him the first manager in the history of the “Reds” to win 8 of his first 9 games in charge.
Slots left Feyenoord to take over at Liverpool from former German coach Jurgen Klopp last summer and has done an incredible job, leading the Reds to the top of the ยูฟ่าเบท league and winning two consecutive European games to earn a full six points.
In this game, Slot still holds on to its best starting 11 players consisting of Alisson Becker; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson; Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister; Mohamed Salah, Dominic Soboszlai, Luis Diaz; Darwin Nunez.
Liverpool’s overall performance was also much better than their visitors and they got two goals from Mac Allister and Salah, who has scored 49 goals in the UEFA Champions League since moving from Roma to Anfield in the summer of 2017.
However, Liverpool still have a tough task ahead of them with six games remaining in the UEFA Champions League league phase and in particular they face off against last season’s Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, managed by former midfielder Xabi Alonso, and 15-time European champions Real Madrid .
Slots’ team have made a perfect start to this year’s European football and currently sit fifth out of the 36 teams, putting them in a good position to automatically qualify for the round of 16 without having to play extra games through play-offs.
During Klopp’s nearly nine years at Anfield, he guided Liverpool to European success, reaching two Champions League finals and winning one, as well as two quarter-finals and a Europa League final.
Meanwhile, the 46-year-old Slot has admitted that he wants to build on his success with Liverpool to make the Kop remember him as a manager with a trophy on his hands rather than someone who led the team to win eight of his first nine games but failed to win a trophy.
“I don’t expect this (eight wins from nine games) to be remembered in one, two or three years because you never know how long I can be here as a manager who wins eight of his first nine games,” the Dutch coach said.
“I hope to do something special, more than winning eight out of nine games. You can never win a game, nobody can do that perfectly. But I’m looking for tangible success. Maybe winning a trophy with the club is the answer,” Slot concluded.
